Also, I'm no scientist so, theoretically speaking. Wouldn't solving our problems on Earth increase our knowledge base for any attempts to make another planet habitable?

If we can't heal our own atmosphere, how can we possibly hope to create and sustain one on a planet like Mars? It seems to make logical sense to hold off on shifting our focus toward other planets until after ours is in as good a position as possible.
