I dated a guy once who became really insecure by this. He said he bothered him that I didn't need him, because he didn't know how not to be needed (his sisters and mom were completely financially dependant on him and he was used to that role) and without my dependence, he thought I'd leave him.

I don't say this to speak ill of him. He actually isn't a bad guy. He treated me well and had a big heart, but he was lost in the expectations of patriarchy and couldn't overcome his insecurities.
