1. The Neanderthals. I find it fascinating how recent discoveries are showing we had a different relationship with them -- one far less hostile -- and that we perhaps more in common with them than previously believed.

2. Yes and no. Clearly it's possible to create a judgement about anything, at any time. However, I think the past should be used more as a marker to show the growth or decline of a person or society. In other words, my judgements tend to be less about what happened in the past and more about what's happened since.
