New Research Shows Dyslexia is Not a Disability

It’s an evolutionary trait

All three of my siblings made school look easy, always bringing home high grades with minimal studying while I labored for hours only to maintain an average GPA. “Your siblings may have book smarts, but you have more common sense than most people I know. People just learn differently.” Mom reasoned.

When I was in my early twenties, I called my mom and told her I thought I’m dyslexic. Her response? “Oh. Yeah, probably.” She went on to tell me that some of my cousins have dyslexia and that it runs in our family. I’m not severely dyslexic, just enough to make life a little harder sometimes.

I spent much of my life thinking I was dumber than others because I couldn’t read as well or process information the way others could. But the more I learned (my way, on my terms), the more I came to view dyslexia not as a handicap but as just another way to experience life, kinda how some people have Synaesthesia or don’t have inner monologues. Apparently, I was right.

I’m sure you have some idea of what it means when someone says they have dyslexia, and there’s a reason. According to the Yale Center for Dyslexia and Creativity, 20 percent of the population are dyslexic, and dyslexia accounts for 80– 90…
