Oh wow, that's super interesting and makes so much sense. The brain does something similar with vision. My grandma had a condition where she had a major blindspot in her vision but she didn't realize it because her brain tried to fill in the gaps.

She almost got into a car accident because the car was in a blind spot so she didn't see the car coming before making a turn. Her brain had made it look (to her) that the road was clear.
