That Time S.W.A.T Came to My House

A cautionary true tale about showing up unannounced

During my second year at a small-town university, I lived with three female friends in a small house near campus. One night, my roommate *Sophie ran into my bedroom, shutting and locking the door behind her.

She urgently whispered for me to hang up the phone with my boyfriend. “Someone’s trying to break in,” she said with eyes wide, “call 911 right now.”

“Oh shit, someone’s in our house”

At first, I thought Sophie was joking, but the fear in her eyes was real. “What are you talking about?” I asked. “It’s ten at night, all of our lights are on, and all of our cars are out front. Who would possibly be dumb enough to break in?” I reasoned.

Sophie filled me in. She heard voices and someone shuffling around outside her window, so did *Lauren. They’re sure someone’s trying to break in. After all, aside from my boyfriend, none of us had close friends outside of our house.

I asked Sophie if the front door was locked. It wasn’t. So logically, I figured that’s the first thing to be addressed. I hung up the phone and headed to lock the door.

I was about a second away from stepping into the living room when the front door opened. I jumped…
